Jack Mason’s Born & Raised: A Smarter Way to Launch, Backed by the Palmera Skin Diver

If there’s one thing the microbrand world doesn’t need more of, it’s another “limited drop” that isn’t actually limited, or a “community project” that’s really just a dressed up pre order. So fair play to Jack Mason for trying something a bit different.

With its new Born & Raised programme, the Dallas outfit is attempting to drag watch launches a little closer to reality.

Built with you, not dumped on you

The idea behind Born & Raised is refreshingly simple. Instead of producing a batch of watches and hoping they sell, Jack Mason flips the script: production only happens once enough people actually commit to buying one.

Think of it as pre order with a bit more backbone. Not quite crowdfunding, not quite traditional retail. Somewhere in that sweet spot where brands don’t overproduce and buyers don’t feel like guinea pigs.

There’s a defined “founder window”, during which early adopters lock in their watch at a reduced price. Miss the threshold, and the whole thing is scrapped. Hit it, and production kicks off with a roughly 120 day turnaround.

It’s part risk, part reward, and entirely more honest than quietly overstocking a warehouse.

Even better, early buyers aren’t just customers, they’re participants. Hit 200 reservations and the community gets to vote on a third colourway. Which is either brilliant engagement or a dangerous amount of power to give people who still argue about date windows.

Enter the Palmera Skin Diver

All of this would be meaningless if the watch itself was a dud. Thankfully, the Palmera Skin Diver is anything but.

At 39mm wide and just 10.8mm thick, it lands squarely in that Goldilocks zone modern enthusiasts bang on about. Compact, wearable, and refreshingly free of the dinner plate syndrome.

Visually, it leans into that classic compressor style aesthetic, complete with dual crowns and an internal rotating bezel. That internal bezel is the key here. It gives you dive timing functionality without the usual external clunkiness, and keeps everything protected under the sapphire crystal.

It’s a skin diver in name, but with 200 metres of water resistance, it’s more than capable of handling actual diving rather than just looking the part on a lounger in Marbella.

Dial options start with:

  • Ash: understated, black, does everything well

  • Ember: bright orange, unapologetically fun

And then there’s that potential third, crowd chosen wildcard waiting in the wings.

Proper spec where it counts

Under the bonnet sits the La Joux Perret G101, which is quickly becoming the thinking person’s alternative to the usual suspects. You’re getting a healthy 68 hour power reserve and accuracy regulated to around ±5 seconds per day.

Other highlights include:

  • 39mm case

  • Sapphire crystal

  • BGW9 lume

  • 316L steel with added hardness coating

  • Choice of bracelet or Tropic style rubber strap

  • 200m water resistance

In short, no gimmicks. Just solid, well judged decisions.

The price of being early

Here’s where Born & Raised really earns its keep.

Founder price sits at $1,049, jumping to $1,349 once the watch hits standard retail.

That’s not an insignificant saving, and crucially, it rewards commitment rather than punishing it later with discounts.

Of course, the flip side is that you’re backing the project before it exists in physical form. No trying it on. No waiting for reviews. Just you, your instincts, and a mildly concerning amount of watch related optimism.

Winding Things Up

There’s something quietly compelling about this whole approach.

Born & Raised feels like a grown up answer to a problem the industry has been tiptoeing around for years. Too much stock, too much guesswork, and not enough alignment between what brands make and what people actually want.

By tying production directly to demand, Jack Mason isn’t just selling a watch, it’s testing a model that could genuinely reshape how microbrands operate. As for the Palmera Skin Diver, it’s exactly what you’d hope for. Sensible sizing, proper specs, and just enough personality to avoid being forgettable. No excess. No nonsense. No pretending it’s something it isn’t. And in today’s market, that might be the most refreshing thing of all.
