The New Kiwame Tokyo KUBO Sakura Is Japanese Watchmaking At Its Most Charming

Kiwame Tokyo's latest release, the KUBO Sakura, might just be the brand's most compelling watch yet. Following the success of the Kurotsuki, Usuki and Mune collections, the new KUBO introduces a more refined, dressier aesthetic centred around the Japanese concept of depth and shadow.

The star of the show is the soft pink lacquer dial inspired by cherry blossoms. Unlike many pink dials that scream for attention, the Sakura is remarkably restrained, with subtle shifts in tone as light moves across the surface. Hidden within the recessed small seconds display at 4:30 is a discreet cherry blossom motif that only reveals itself from certain angles. It's the sort of detail that rewards ownership rather than demanding attention on Instagram.

What makes the KUBO particularly interesting is its blend of dress watch elegance and everyday practicality. The predominantly brushed case avoids the overly precious feel that many dress watches suffer from, while the compact proportions should wear beautifully on a wide range of wrists.

Winding Things Up

Kiwame Tokyo continues to carve out a niche somewhere between Kurono Tokyo and the best of the Japanese microbrand scene. The movement choice will inevitably divide opinion, with some collectors questioning the use of a Miyota 82 series calibre at this price point, but the design, finishing and overall execution look exceptional. For anyone after a compact, characterful dress watch with genuine Japanese design sensibilities, the KUBO Sakura looks like one of the most interesting releases of 2026 so far.
