Awake’s New Guilloché Main Collection Is Pure Dial Theatre

There are plenty of microbrands making good watches right now. Far fewer are making watches that genuinely stop you mid scroll. French independent Awake has built its reputation on exactly that kind of emotional design, and its new Guilloché Main collection might be the brand’s strongest release yet.

At the centre of the collection is an extraordinary combination of traditional hand turned guilloché and Vietnamese Sơn Mài lacquer artistry. The result is a trio of watches that look almost liquid under light, with every dial shifting colour and texture depending on the angle.

The collection launches with three distinct colourways, and each one has its own personality.

The Alba is probably the showstopper. A mix of fiery reds, oranges and golds creates a molten sunset effect that feels incredibly dramatic. Combined with the wave like guilloché engraving underneath the lacquer, the dial almost appears to move as the light hits it. It is loud in the best possible way and feels more like wearable art than a conventional watch dial.

Then there is the Borealis, which leans into vivid greens and yellows inspired by the Northern Lights. It is fresh, futuristic and slightly psychedelic without ever becoming gimmicky. The colour transition across the dial works beautifully with the engraved pattern underneath, giving the watch a huge amount of depth.

Finally, the Sunset takes a darker and more mysterious route, blending electric pinks and purples into a rich twilight aesthetic. It is arguably the most unconventional of the three and perfectly captures Awake’s ability to make watches feel genuinely creative rather than simply colourful.

What makes these watches particularly impressive is that the craftsmanship underneath the aesthetics is completely legitimate. The guilloché work is produced in Italy using traditional rose engine techniques before being sent to Vietnam for the lacquer application process. This is not stamped texture pretending to be high craft. It is real decorative artistry, and it shows.

Beyond the dial, Awake has also refined the overall package. The new 38mm stainless steel case feels much more versatile and wearable than previous models from the brand, with softer curves and cleaner proportions helping the watch stay elegant despite the explosive dial colours. Inside sits the La Joux Perret G101 automatic movement with a strong 68 hour power reserve, giving the watch substance beyond its visual appeal.

In many ways, this release represents where independent watchmaking is heading. Collectors are increasingly moving away from safe designs and heritage cosplay in favour of watches with genuine individuality. Awake understands that perfectly. The Guilloché Main collection does not look like anything else on the market right now, and honestly, that is exactly the point.
