Casio G Shock DW 5600MNC: The Square That Just Got More Interesting

There are few watches in the world that feel as honest as a square G Shock. No fuss. No nonsense. Just a small brick of indestructible timekeeping strapped to your wrist.

The original square design traces its lineage all the way back to the early days of G Shock and it has barely changed since. That is partly because it does not need to. The formula works. A resin case, a simple digital display and a level of toughness that borders on absurd. The modern DW 5600 still delivers everything people expect from a G Shock including shock resistance, 200 metre water resistance, a stopwatch, countdown timer and alarm functions. It is simple and incredibly reliable.

But every so often Casio gives the square a small twist, just to keep things interesting.

Enter the latest variant, the Casio G Shock DW 5600MNC.

A Square With a Different Strap

At first glance it looks like a typical DW 5600. Same iconic square profile. Same utilitarian digital display. Same reassuringly chunky buttons.

Then you notice the strap.

Instead of the usual resin band, Casio has fitted the watch with a cloth strap that stretches significantly and fastens with a magnetic Fidlock buckle. It snaps shut with a satisfying click and can be released with one hand. The idea is simple. Faster adjustment, better comfort and a slightly more technical feel on the wrist.

For anyone who has ever swapped a G Shock onto a NATO or fabric strap, this feels like Casio finally acknowledging what enthusiasts have been doing for years.

Three Colourways, Same Tough DNA

The MNC series comes in three flavours.

There is a stealthy all black version with an inverted display that feels like classic G Shock minimalism. Then a light grey model with bright neon yellow accents that leans into modern sportswear aesthetics. Finally there is a more playful multi colour version pairing a grey bezel with a navy, orange and yellow strap.

Underneath the colour and strap changes, the watch remains classic DW 5600. The case measures 48.9 mm from top to bottom and weighs a featherlight 53 grams. It is built from resin with mineral glass protecting the display and delivers the legendary shock resistance that made G Shock famous.

In other words, you can still throw it at a wall, drop it off a bike ride or take it diving without much concern.

Why The Square Still Matters

There are more advanced G Shocks out there. Solar powered models. Radio controlled models. Even fully metal versions that cost several hundred pounds.

Yet the humble DW 5600 still sits right at the heart of the collection.

Part of the charm is its honesty. This is a watch that does exactly what it promises. No luxury pretence. No delicate finishing. Just a brutally practical digital watch that will probably outlast half the things in your house.

The MNC version adds a subtle twist without losing that spirit. It is still a classic square, just with a slightly more modern and adaptable strap.

The Verdict

For around the price of a decent dinner out, the DW 5600MNC delivers the kind of durability, comfort and everyday usefulness that many watches costing ten times as much struggle to match.

It is proof that sometimes the best watch is not the most complicated one.

Sometimes it is just a tough little square that refuses to quit.
