Christopher Ward Gives the Bel Canto Lumière a Crisp New Look

When Christopher Ward unveiled the Bel Canto Lumière, it quickly became one of the brand's boldest interpretations of its award winning chiming watch. Now, rather than introducing an entirely new concept, the British brand has opted for refinement. The latest Bel Canto Lumière is simply a fresh colour variant of the Neon edition released previously, retaining everything that made the original stand out while presenting it in a cleaner, more understated palette.

For anyone hoping for a new movement or a mechanical overhaul, there is none. This is a visual update, and that is no bad thing. Christopher Ward has wisely resisted the temptation to reinvent one of its most successful watches.

The fundamentals remain unchanged. Housed in a lightweight Grade 5 titanium case measuring 41mm, the Bel Canto Lumière continues to showcase the remarkable FS01 calibre. Built around a Sellita SW200 base, the movement incorporates Christopher Ward's in house sonnerie module that delivers the now famous hourly chime. It remains one of the most accessible mechanical striking complications available today, and arguably the watch that cemented Christopher Ward's place among the industry's most innovative brands.

Where the Lumière differs from the standard Bel Canto is its focus on illumination. The dial replaces the traditional layered architecture with a dramatic luminescent display featuring a Globolight ring surrounding the time display, alongside extensive Super LumiNova treatment across the dial. It transforms completely after dark, giving the watch an almost futuristic appearance that feels more Tron than traditional Swiss watchmaking.

This latest version tones things down visually compared to the earlier Neon release. While the original leaned heavily into bright green highlights and maximum contrast, the new model adopts a crisper white execution that feels cleaner, more versatile and arguably easier to wear daily. The glow remains every bit as dramatic once the lights go out, but during daylight hours the watch presents itself with a little more restraint.

That distinction is important because mechanically, nothing has changed. Buyers are getting exactly the same watch beneath the new colours. The titanium construction, sapphire crystal, architectural dial, chiming complication and impressive lume performance all carry over unchanged. This is very much an aesthetic refresh rather than the next chapter in the Bel Canto story.

That is perhaps the only criticism that can be levelled at this release. Those familiar with the Neon edition may have hoped for a more substantial evolution, whether through new materials, additional complications or a revised movement. Instead, Christopher Ward has chosen to expand the collection through colour, much like many larger luxury brands routinely do with their flagship models.

Still, when the foundation is this strong, perhaps that's enough. The Bel Canto remains one of the most original watches under £5000, offering a genuinely unusual complication, striking contemporary design and finishing that continues to outperform its price point.

Winding Things Up

The latest Bel Canto Lumière is less a new release than a new expression of an already established design. If you loved the Neon version but wanted something a little cleaner and easier to live with, this white execution may well be the sweet spot. Those hoping for an entirely new Bel Canto will need to wait a little longer, but for everyone else, Christopher Ward has once again demonstrated that sometimes a simple change of colour is all it takes to make an already exceptional watch feel fresh again.
