Frederique Constant Goes Nautical Again With The New Classics Runabout Automatic GMT
Some watches are designed for the boardroom. Others belong on the deck of a beautifully varnished wooden speedboat, sunglasses on, shirt collar flapping in the breeze and absolutely nowhere important to be.
That has always been the appeal of Frederique Constant's Runabout collection, and for 2026 the brand has added something genuinely useful to the formula with the arrival of the new Classics Runabout Automatic GMT.
Created in partnership with the Riva Historical Society, the latest Runabout continues a relationship that stretches back well over a decade, celebrating the iconic Italian boats that became symbols of Mediterranean glamour during the 1950s and 1960s.
A Fresh Take On A Familiar Design
At first glance, the new model remains unmistakably Runabout.
The polished 42mm stainless steel case keeps its slightly oversized proportions and dressy appearance, while the sapphire case back carries the Riva Historical Society emblem alongside each watch's individual limited edition number.
The biggest visual change comes from the dial. Previous Runabout models often featured guilloché or hobnail textures, but this year's editions introduce vertically brushed centres inspired by the teak decking found aboard classic Riva boats.
Buyers have two choices.
The navy blue version evokes open water and comes fitted to a sporty black rubber strap, while the warm brown dial mimics polished timber and is paired with an equally rich brown leather strap. Both feature applied hour markers, vintage toned lume and a date window neatly positioned at six o'clock.
Finally A GMT
The headline feature this year is undoubtedly the GMT complication.
Powering the watch is the FC 350 automatic calibre, based on a Sellita movement but fitted with Frederique Constant's own GMT module. It delivers a central GMT hand, 24 hour indication and a respectable 38 hour power reserve.
There is one caveat.
This is what's commonly known as a caller or office GMT rather than a traveller GMT. That means the GMT hand is adjusted independently rather than the local hour hand. For frequent flyers that may be a slight disappointment, but for anyone tracking family abroad or keeping tabs on another time zone while working, it remains a genuinely practical complication at this price point.
A Nice Touch For Collectors
As with previous Runabout editions, every watch arrives in a special presentation box complete with a miniature wooden Runabout boat.
Is it essential? Absolutely not.
Is it the sort of quirky addition that collectors secretly love? Definitely.
Combined with the limited production of just 888 pieces for each colourway, it gives the collection a little extra charm without feeling overly gimmicky.

Frederique Constant rarely shouts for attention, and that's arguably one of its biggest strengths.
The new Classics Runabout Automatic GMT doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it adds a genuinely useful complication to one of the brand's most successful limited edition collections while maintaining the elegant styling that has made the Runabout series so popular.
The movement may not be a true traveller GMT, and some enthusiasts will inevitably point that out, but at around £1,700 this remains one of the more attractive Swiss GMT offerings on the market.
If your idea of summer involves polished mahogany, blue water and a watch that looks equally comfortable at a marina restaurant as it does in the office, this latest Runabout could be well worth a closer look.
