Straum Freezes Time With The Stunning New Frozen Metal Titanium

There are brands that simply release another colourway, and then there are brands like Straum that manage to create something that feels genuinely fresh. The Norwegian independent has just unveiled the Jan Mayen Frozen Metal Titanium, and while it builds on the already excellent Jan Mayen platform, this latest release introduces enough meaningful upgrades to make it one of the most compelling releases of the year.

Inspired by the harsh beauty of the Arctic, the Frozen Metal Titanium looks exactly as its name suggests. Cold, crisp and beautifully engineered.

A Dial That Looks Like Ice Creeping Across Steel

Straum has built a reputation for producing some of the most distinctive textured dials in the microbrand world, and the Frozen Metal Titanium may well be its finest work yet.

The new dial uses a proprietary galvanic treatment to create the appearance of frost gradually spreading across bare metal. Rather than the familiar fumé effect that darkens towards the edge, this finish works in reverse, with a bright frosted perimeter that appears to slowly consume the centre of the dial.

It is subtle enough to remain elegant but detailed enough to reward close inspection, exactly the sort of craftsmanship enthusiasts have come to expect from the Norwegian brand.

Completing the icy aesthetic are polished Frostbite Blue hands and applied hour markers, creating a striking contrast against the silver white dial while maintaining excellent legibility.

Titanium Done Properly

The Jan Mayen has always been a brilliantly proportioned sports watch and thankfully Straum has resisted the temptation to make unnecessary changes.

The Grade 5 titanium case measures 38.7 mm across, 11.5 mm thick and has a compact 45.7 mm lug to lug measurement. It is one of those rare watches that should comfortably suit almost every wrist size.

The bead blasted finish gives the titanium a purposeful tool watch appearance while polished accents around the case prevent it from feeling overly utilitarian. Water resistance remains a reassuring 100 metres thanks to the screw down crown.

Finally, a Matching Titanium Bracelet

Perhaps the biggest news is not actually the watch itself but what comes attached to it.

The Frozen Metal Titanium marks the debut of Straum's long awaited integrated Grade 5 titanium bracelet, complete with the brand's own micro adjust clasp. The bracelet features polished and bead blasted surfaces that perfectly match the case and tapers elegantly towards the clasp for improved comfort.

The new clasp offers 4 mm of on the fly adjustment, something many collectors have been asking for, while a quick release system makes swapping between bracelet and rubber strap effortless.

Even better, existing owners of titanium Jan Mayen models will be pleased to know the bracelet is fully compatible with previous titanium references.

Proven Swiss Power

Powering the Frozen Metal Titanium is the familiar La Joux Perret G101 automatic movement.

It remains one of the best choices at this price point, offering a healthy 68 hour power reserve, a smooth 4 Hz beat rate and dependable daily performance. Straum uses the Soigné specification, adjusted in four positions, with the movement visible through the sapphire exhibition caseback.

The decision to stick with the no date version also keeps the dial perfectly balanced while avoiding the redundant crown positions found on some alternatives.

Pricing and Availability

The Straum Frozen Metal Titanium is available either on the new Grade 5 titanium bracelet or an integrated FKM rubber strap.

Pricing starts at approximately £1,750 on rubber, rising to around £1,980 on the titanium bracelet before local taxes, placing it firmly in the premium independent watch segment. Considering the level of finishing, the unique dial work and the addition of an entirely new bracelet system, it feels competitively positioned against many established Swiss brands.

Winding Things Up

Straum continues to prove that originality is still alive in independent watchmaking.

Rather than chasing vintage nostalgia or copying established luxury designs, the Frozen Metal Titanium takes inspiration directly from Norway's dramatic Arctic landscapes and translates them into something genuinely distinctive. The frosted dial is exceptional, the new bracelet addresses one of the few requests existing owners had, and the overall package feels mature, thoughtfully executed and refreshingly different.

For collectors looking for an integrated titanium sports watch that stands apart from the crowd, the Frozen Metal Titanium deserves to be very high on the shortlist.
