The CIGA Design Time Cipher
The year opens on an intriguing note with the CIGA Design Time Cipher, a watch that does not simply tell the time but challenges how it is read and understood. This is not a traditional hours and minutes exercise. It is a mechanical idea built around reflection, movement and restraint.
At the heart of the Time Cipher is a wandering hour display, a concept rooted deep in horological history but presented here in a distinctly modern way. There are no conventional hands sweeping endlessly around a dial. Instead, time is revealed through alignment and motion, encouraging the wearer to slow down and engage rather than glance and move on.
The dial is treated in an ultra deep black finish that absorbs light almost completely. Against this void, the active elements appear to hover, giving the watch a sense of depth and calm. Polished markers and subtle detailing catch just enough light to guide the eye without ever dominating the view. It is minimal, but never empty.
At the centre sits the wandering mechanism. A single hand tracks the minutes, its partially skeletonised form decorated with fine finishing that rewards closer inspection. Beneath it, a rotating hour disc advances steadily, revealing the current hour as it passes a fixed reference point. It is an elegant interaction of components, more suggestion than statement.
The stainless steel case measures 45 millimetres across but remains relatively slim, giving it a balanced (if not slightly large) presence on the wrist. The profile is smooth and sculpted, topped with a domed sapphire crystal that adds further dimensionality to the dial. Despite the unconventional display, the watch wears with surprising ease and comfort.
Powering the Time Cipher is the CD 08 automatic movement, based on a proven Miyota architecture and adapted to support the wandering hour complication. It runs at a modern frequency and offers a practical power reserve, ensuring the watch remains as usable as it is conceptual.
On the wrist, the black rubber strap and hidden deployment clasp reinforce the contemporary feel. It is a watch designed to be worn daily rather than admired from a distance, even if it does invite a second look from those who notice it.
In a market crowded with bold claims and visual excess, the CIGA Design Time Cipher takes a quieter route. It offers complexity without chaos and originality without noise. Maybe this is the reason the CIGA are regularly mentioned at the GPHG Awards. For those who appreciate mechanical thoughtfulness over spectacle, this is a watch that reveals its character slowly, and deliberately.
